CHAPTER 15

Ransom and I drive along the stunning Maui coastline and I marvel at the palm trees and the water that at times seems to be a few steps outside the car right up until we reach our destination.

We drive north for about twenty minutes and stop off at a rental shop where we pick up our gear for snorkeling before heading to a place called Honolua Bay. We park and walk down a dirt trail under the protection of a canopy of fruit trees and flowering trees in every color until we hit an aqua glowing cove.

“Oh, Ransom,” I say as I try to take in all the beauty at once. There’s a catamaran anchored in the bay and dozens upon dozens of tourists snorkeling away. The breeze is warm and perfumed from the trees nearby, and the teal water looks as if it’s doing its best to seduce us into diving right in. “This truly is paradise.”

“It gets better,” he says, leading us down the rocky shoreline as we pile our things under some shrubbery and he lands a few stray branches on top of it.

He strips off his shirt and my jaw unhinges.

First of all, it’s not fair that he gets to go through life with the face of a deity, but the body of one, too?

I’m not all that surprised. Ransom is heavily chiseled, his six-pack has a six-pack and his skin is perfectly bronzed.

He glances at my dress and lifts a brow before pretending to busy himself by zipping and unzipping the backpack he brought along.

Oh, good grief, it’s my turn to strip.

Why does this feel so wrong?

I peel off my dress and flick off my flip-flops. “All ready to go,” I say, sucking in my stomach with all the strength I can muster, suddenly regretting the miles of lava cake I’ve inhaled since I was introduced to the chocolaty wonder.

“Let’s do this,” he says as we head to the water, put on our fins and snorkel gear—and to my surprise, I catch onto that whole breathing underwater thing as if I didn’t nearly need a sedative just the other day.

Ransom and I swim side by side as we come upon an endless parade of sea turtles, schools of orange striped fish, yellow and black striped fish, pale blue angels, and a few strays that are as long as they are fat. An eel shoots out from between a few rocks and my entire body jerks as I begin to panic.

Ransom grabs me by the waist and buoys us to the top and we spit out our mouthpieces.

“Are you okay?” he asks as he flips his mask onto his forehead.

I give a frenetic laugh. “I think so. I wasn’t expecting that little guy. I’m not a fan of his slithering land cousin either, so my reaction is no surprise.”

We rise with a wave that barrels past us and Ransom pulls me close for a moment before letting go.

“Sorry.” He frowns. “I didn’t mean to—”

“No, it’s okay.
